Jiffy Lube University’s Strategies to Support Profitable Growth

The primary business goal of Jiffy Lube is profitable growth of the Jiffy Lube franchise system with three strategies: 1) Improve the JLU footprint, 2) aggressively market and sell their products and services, and 3) deliver consistent, excellent customer experience. In 2010, Jiffy Lube University (JLU) conducted a thorough, multi-faceted evaluation of their products and services in order to improve their alignment to the organization, incorporate best practices for adult learning, and increase training effectiveness for every learner to make sure JLU made a significant contribution to the business goals and strategies.

The Manager of Learning and Development led and leads this effort. By working closely with Jiffy Lube International, the Jiffy Lube Association of Franchisees, and the company’s senior leadership, the Manager of L&D is able to identify how JLU can meet each of their unique business needs and align JLU’s strategies to support them.

Participants will learn the details about the strategies that Jiffy Lube has implemented to ensure alignment of the JLU learning strategy with the needs of the company:

  • How to align with the business, franchisees, and key vendors
  • How the Manager of L&D influences business objectives
  • How training needs are identified & solutions developed
  • How senior leadership is involved in JLU
  • How JLU drives strategic change at Jiffy Lube
  • How JLU supports total organizational learning

In addition, participants will learn the impact that these alignment strategies are having on the company in regard to training costs, productivity level, employee retention, customer service, franchisee recruitment, and franchisee approval ratings.

Since 2006 Kenneth Barber has served as Manager of L&D for Shell Oil Company with responsibility for Jiffy Lube International’s 2000+ stores and 20,000+ employees. Under his leadership, Jiffy Lube University was created in 2008 with 66 WBT courses and 8 ILT courses. With a Learning Team of only 8, JLU recorded over 1 million hours of learning in 2010! Ken’s innovation and excellence has helped JLU win awards from organizations such as ASE, ATMC, Training Magazine Top 125, CorpU Xchange, and Learning 100.
