Social Learning Executive Council-Shell: Using a Corporate Wiki to Collaborate and Learn

When: Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 : 11:00AM - 12:00PM EST

About three years ago, Shell launched a corporate encyclopedia to capture terms and concepts relevant to the company and industry. Over time, the interest in and use of the wiki grew, and people started adding best practices to the wiki repository. With the company continually working on improving the user experience, the Shell Wiki is now used regularly and is accepted as a day-to-day resource for best practices, especially in the company’s technical area.

Seeing the success of the wiki, the Shell learning organization has also leveraged the tool, recently putting all their learning material into it (and out of PowerPoint presentations) so that everyone within the organization can learn from it – not just those who attend specific classes. In addition, about 100 different courses are now run primarily through the Shell Wiki. And, seeing a shift away from formal to more informal learning under way at Shell, they know that the wiki will become even more important as a knowledge sharing and collaboration platform over time.

During this session, Shell will present its wiki, and discussion will address the following questions, and more:

  • What was the business case for launching the corporate wiki in the first place?
  • What are the quality standards (best practices) for adding learning materials to a wiki?
  • What courses are best suited for a wiki?
  • What have been the benefits of conducting learning through the Shell Wiki?
  • What have been some challenges, and how did they overcome them?
  • What were the legal and cultural issues that had to be addressed?

Come to this September 29th meeting for a fascinating exploration of a tool that many companies find difficult, if not impossible, to successfully integrate into their learning strategy.
