Freescale - Coaching
Andrea Handy – Director, Learning & Development

When addressing the idea of coaching for performance, the first step Freescale takes is to define what the term ‘coaching’ means to the company. They define it as how a manager takes advantage of an opportunity to teach by recognizing the ability to improve an employee.

A managerial shortcoming may consist of a manager telling an employee “you did a good job,” but not following through with a discussion of the specifics or how to replicate the action. Only when the above definition of coaching and its importance is embedded into the culture can you have the ability to teach the art of coaching.

A key player in Freescale’s Manager Curriculum – at every level – is to implant coaching into the company’s culture. They recognize that the only way to get there is to have managers be good coaches and help the employees develop through recognizing the existing support structures and opportunities for growth.
