:: Executive Summary ::

Corporate University Xchange (CorpU) analysts and consultants conducted two in-depth studies on leadership development practices from July through October 2007.  The 8th Annual Benchmarking Study examined organization structures, the efficacy of various leadership development programs and activities, the change these programs have undergone within the last two years, and the impact organization culture has on leadership program success.  The Leadership 2012 research project explored in greater detail how organizations forecast leadership talent needs, conduct succession planning, select and develop employees with high potential, and measure impact of leadership programs.

The two studies reviewed practices in more than 250 organizations, with 20 percent of those firms headquartered outside the US.  The study sample covered a wide range of organizations in size (from less than 2,500 to more than 100,000) and industry type as shown in the image below.

The 8th Annual Benchmarking Report - Leadership Trends and Best Practices represents a culmination of findings from the two studies and answers important questions about executive and leadership development practices such as:

  • What factors pose the most significant threats to the organization’s ability to develop a strong pipeline of leadership talent?
  • Why are current leadership selection and development practices successful in some organizations and failures in others?
  • What role does a formal governance structure play in driving the success of leadership programs?
  • Who should be involved in selecting high potential talent at each level of leadership?
  • How prepared are leaders to support emerging markets, to lead the Generation Y workforce and to direct virtual teams?

Overall, the two studies asked more than 70 questions, each with detailed sub-parts, to get a clear view on the current state of leadership development practices.
