Overview
Companies do not build internal capability to perform all the tasks involved in making a product or providing a service. They use internal talent to do what the company does best – often defined as the company’s core competency – and outsource or partner for the rest. Learning and Development (L&D) organizations do the same. Outsourcing and partnering enable L&D organizations to concentrate internal staff efforts on defining and developing the learning critical to executing the company’s business strategy. The spending on external vendor partners and outsourcing is huge, amounting to more than one-third of all L&D spending. With the total spending on corporate learning estimated at more than $50 billion in the United States alone,¹ the percentage outsourced can be estimated at more than $15 billion. This level of spending requires care and diligence when engaging partners. L&D organizations are looking for high-quality external resources that understand business and are interested in working with internal subject matter experts (SMEs). They also want to create long-term relationships and value the creativity of potential partners.
