Serious games and situated learning through simulations have proven to be effective, particularly when the game elements — and limitations of hardware or software — are mitigated and are made to complement the learning design.
Engagement is one of the keys to an impactful learning experience, and there is a generation of learners that expect to be actively engaged when they are at their computers. Purposefully designed games that enhance the learning experience and help to develop transferrable skills, and simulations that make learners take part in an environment that would be hard to create in person can be the ultimate engaging experience. Tools exist to assist in the design of these experiences, but few learning professionals have the expertise to devise these new environments without assistance, and partnering can jumpstart the process.

The development of these new learning elements fits within the Program Design and Delivery dimension of the Execute quadrant of the CorpU 12 Dimensions of Learning Excellence.
